Can rel=”canonical” index my hostname and not my IP address?

On February 26, 2009, Google software engineer Matt Cutts collected questions on Google Moderator and answered many of them on video. Anders from Sweden asked: Will the new canonical tag help with issues where you by accident (stupid editors linking to wrong addresses) have indexed sites by the IP address rather than hostname?
